This isn't directed at you specifically, but I notice a trend in gaming discussion on forums that folks insist that their personal taste is directly matched to good business decisions.
Because in their mind, that's both how they'll get their juicy bonus, and more seriously, keep everyone in a job. If they have market research that shows doing one thing will mean someone's parent, or anyone more casual, is more likely to buy the game, they'll do that. Publishers will always treat long term fans as done deals in terms of sales. We can be puritanical all we like with notions that 'the highest quality games sell the best' or 'the most unique games sell the best', but that sentiment isn't always true, let alone the fact those sentiments are subjective. But rejecting their business decision as 'you're wrong about the general public' shows a lack of understanding of the gaming audience at large.
